Calendar Tricks Taught at Best Bank PO Coaching Classes

Any IBPS exam (PO or Clerk) has a separate section on Reasoning. Questions based on calendars are regularly asked in this section and carry a lot of significance. However, most candidates are not aware of how to solve these questions quickly and to score some sure shot marks. Only with the help of special speed tricks and shortcuts can you solve these questions in less than 30 seconds, while maintaining a high level of accuracy.

Keeping this in mind, the experts at the Center for Best IBPS PO Coaching in Delhi have come up with a unique method for solving calendar based questions. This sure shot method for finding the day of any given date must be understood thoroughly and applied during the exam. The method is as follows:

Step: I Memorize the number code for each month.

Number Code & Month Table

Number Code Month
0 January and October
1 May
2 August
3 February, March and November
4 June
5 September and December
6 April and July

Step: II If the year is less than 2000, then you have to consider only the last 2 digits of that year. However, if the year is equal to or more than 2000, then subtract 1900 from it.

It means for 1914 → Take (14) as the value of the year & for 2014 → Take (2014 – 1900 = 114) as the value of the year.

You know that a leap year comes after every 4 years. In order to find out the value of the leap year, you have to divide the year by 4 and note the quotient.

Step: III Now, you have to Divide (Date + Month + Year + Leap Year) by 7 and find out the remainder. The remainders correspond to the seven days of the week.

  • If the Remainder is 0 (It is Sunday)
  • If the Remainder is 1 (It is Monday)
  • If the Remainder is 2 (It is Tuesday)
  • If the Remainder is 3 (It is Wednesday)
  • If the Remainder is 4 (It is Thursday)
  • If the Remainder is 5 (It is Friday)
  • If the Remainder is 6 (It is Saturday)

NOTE: This method is applicable only for finding the days of the dates that fall between the years 1900 and 2100.

Example: I Find out what day it was when India became independent (15th August, 1947).

Solution: I

Date → 15

Month → 2 (code for August)

Year → 47 (last 2 digits of 1947)

Leap year → 11 (47 ÷ 4 = 11 as quotient)

Sum of these 4 values = (15 + 2 + 47 + 11) = 75. Upon dividing 75 by 7, you will get the remainder ‘5’. So, it was Friday on 15th August, 1947.

Example: II What was the day on 27th January, 2015?

Solution: II

Date → 27

Month → 0 (code for January)

Year → 115 (2015 – 1900 = 115)

Leap year → 28 (115 ÷ 4 = 28 as quotient)

Sum of these 4 values = (27 + 0 + 115 + 28) = 170. When 170 is divided by 7, the remainder obtained is ‘2’. Thus, the day on 27th January, 2015 was Tuesday.

Example: III What was the day when India became a Republic (26th January, 1950)?

Solution: III

Date → 26

Month → 0 (code for January)

Year → 50 (last 2 digits of 1950)

Leap year → 12 (50 ÷ 4 = 12 as quotient)

Sum of these 4 values = 26 + 0 + 50 + 12 = 88. Upon dividing 88 by 7, the remainder obtained is ‘4’. Therefore, it was a Thursday on 26th January, 1950.

Example: IV Find out what day it was on 23rd September, 2015.

Solution: IV

Date → 23

Month → 5 (code for September)

Year → 115 (2015 – 1900 = 115)

Leap year → 28 (115 ÷ 4 = 28 as quotient)

Sum of these 4 values = 23 + 5 + 115 + 28 = 171. By dividing 171 with 7, you will get the remainder ‘3’. That means it was a Wednesday on 23rd September, 2015.

Example: V What was the day on 18th May, 1983?

Solution: V

Date → 18

Month → 1 (code for May)

Year → 83 (last 2 digits of 1983)

Leap year → 20 (83 ÷ 4 = 20 as quotient)

Sum of these 4 values = 18 + 1 + 83 + 20 = 122.Upon dividing 122 by 7, you will obtain ‘3’ as the remainder. So, on 18th September, 1983 it was a Wednesday.
